3 Magic Questions to Answer when Building a Website

There are 3 questions that really matter when building a website. The answers should help you form a plan for a successful, and profitable site.

  1. TRAFFIC: How will the site get found and by who?
  2. VALUE: What forms of value does the site provide to the visitor?
  3. CONVERSION: What will the visitor be asked to buy or what other action do you want them to take?

Fight linkspam with Google's disavow links feature

If your site has fallen victim to linkspam Google now has a tool you can use to report and "disavow" those inbound links to your site. So what is linkspam? Well these are low quality links from "spammy" websites. In some cases you might get those type of links to your site through no fault of your own. But the more common way is hiring the wrong people to do SEO or link building for your website.

The 8 Sectors of Digital Marketing

At GoldHat we organize digital marketing into what we call the 8 Sectors of Digital Marketing. This is simply a way of organizing the workflow, and understanding the different areas of digital marketing. The point of understanding these 8 parts of digital marketing is to organize your planning and management of digital marketing activity. Let's take a look at the list of 8 sectors of digital marketing, and then read on below for example of how to use this list in a practical way when managing your digital marketing.

Perspectives to use when evaluating a website

Website evaluations are a great way to get a big picture view of your entire website. Whether your doing a website evaluation as a service for a client, or your doing it on a DIY basis, there are a few different perspectives you can use when performing your website evaluation. The perspective you choose is basically like the lens you select when taking a photograph. It helps you maintain focus while doing your evaluation of the site.

Staying on track with checklists

Checklists can be a very effective way to keep things on track in your work. I like to use a daily checklist divided into 2 parts, the first is a list of actions or tasks. Basically a standard To Do list. I then add to that results, or targets.

Start with PayPal for payment processing

When your new to eCommerce keeping things simple is important because there are a lot of choices to make. One of those decisions is how to setup the payment processing. The simplest, and often most affordable option, is PayPal. With a discount rate of under 2-3% on most transactions PayPal processing is similar in cost to a typical credit card merchant account.

Use a slide presentation when raising capital

When your seeking capital for your new business, forget the business plan and create a slide presentation instead. At least that is the growing trend, especially in high tech startups today. Having a written business plan might still be important, especially if it is brief and an easy read. But most potential investors simply will not read it at all, or they will heavily skim it reading only a small percentage of the total plan. So if your reliant on making the deal based on a skimming of the information in your business plan, how can you raise the capital you need using a presentation?

Use rich snippets for search engine listings

When we talk about search engine rankings and SEO the focus is usually on earning the rankings. But what if your site is ranked, and your still not getting as much traffic as you should be? The problem might be your results snippets, the lines of text shown to the user in the search result listings.

5 important things you should ask your existing customers for

Existing customers are the life blood of your business. And the thing about that phrase "life blood" is that just like the blood in our veins, we should expect the customers to keep giving life and vitality to our business. It is never asking too much (unless you go too far and really ask for too much). Generally speaking, your customers are happy to keep helping you and giving to you because your existence, your service, your products and services are helping them in some meaningful way.

Here are 5 important things you should be asking your customers for.

If your website doesn't make you money, it's a failure

Okay let's get real for a minute about what makes a good website. There are many "web experts" or "wexperts"... let's just call them geeks, clueless artists and worst of all misguided marketers who will tell you that a good website is everything from a work of art to an "engagement platform" to an code storage platform. I'll let you figure out which explanation fits which stereotypical web expert.

It's all BS really.

Choose a CMS that fits your project

At GoldHat we use 3 CMS systems most often, Drupal, WordPress and the newest addition Concrete5 (C5). We are very excited about C5 because it is the only one on this list that promises to bridge the gap between CMS and PHP Framework because it provides MVC (Model View Controller) architecture.

Drupal is still our standby for most situations. We highly recommend it especially when an ecommerce system is needed alongside other features. It offers exceptional development capabilities. The taxonomy and field module provide great publishing power out of the box.

Definition of long tail keywords

What are "long tail" keywords? You may have heard this phrase used as in "we are focusing on a long tail strategy right now". What it means is targeting the smaller, less competitive keywords that have low search search volume and more specific search intent.

The opposite of a long tail keyword is the highly competitive, high priority keywords that have large volumes of searches and are relatively generic. These have sometimes been called "fat head" keywords to distinguish them from long tail.

Be grateful for every difficult customer

Did you once learn to classify customers as A, B, C and D class customers? Maybe based on how well they fit your target profile, or how much they spend? Well I think this type of thinking is useful, up to a point. But if your frustrated dealing with difficult customers, maybe feeling fed up, wishing they would just take their business elsewhere, here is something to consider first. Be grateful for every customer. Be extra grateful for every difficult customer.

Embrace GoldHat Thinking

At GoldHat we have a philosophy that business, and especially eCommerce, is about making the world a better place. Our goal is to make a difference in the world, and in the individual lives of each person we touch.

GoldHat thinking would not matter much if it were just an ideology. We make it practical by extending the idea of ECONOMICAL VALUE beyond purely financial terms. To us value includes ideas, sharing feedback, solving problems, providing help, to us every interaction has its own merit and value.

Aim for versatility in your logo design

Your logo is the cornerstone in your branding so you want it to be designed for versatility. You might start with letterhead, then a business card but soon your logo will be involved in more complex designs with different layouts demanding different sizes and where your logo is next to different elements. So choose a logo design that will look good not just standing alone on a showcase sheet but inside your website header and footer, on a bus stop bench, maybe even on the side of a building!

Consider responsive web design in your next project

Of all the many buzzwords buzzing today the term responsive web design is topping the charts. And for good reason. The number of people that are getting away from their computers and using mobile devices to visit websites is dramatically increasing every day. And yet the number of websites that work well on smaller screens, is far behind.

Use Drupal taxonomy module to make keyword-rich search engine landing pages

Drupal comes with the taxonomy module as part of its core. Taxonomy is one of Drupal's most innovative and practical modules. It is used to categorize or tag content. It support trees of categories such for a car site: Make > Model > Trim.

Personalize your email marketing messages

Whenever possible you should personalize your email marketing messages in some way. When we think personalized email we often think about the salutation such as "Hello Jim". But this is not always practical because we might not have the first name of our recipient in some cases.

There are other ways to personalize an email in some way. You can also use the username of the person from your site.

Try UserTesting.com for testing your website

User testing to used to be reserved for the big budget website developments. But today anybody can afford user testing. Actually the real question should be, can you afford NOT to do user testing on your website?

UserTesting.com starts at $39 per user tester participating in your testing. Currently they also have a $30 off promotion on tests over $100 for new customers. So you could get 3 user testers for $87 including the discount.

You can also select whether your user testers will use their PC or a mobile device.

Use HootSuite to schedule your social media posts

At GoldHat we have tried over a dozen (and counting) social media publishing programs. In the end we came back to one that is already popular and widely used, HootSuite. Although there are many other interesting and innovative systems out there, HootSuite for us provides the simplest interface for adding and scheduling our posts.

Check your website for errors at the free W3C validation service

Having valid HTML, XHMTL and CSS code in your website is important for a number of reasons including the potential impact that errors have on search engines ability to parse and index your website. So make sure that your site has "valid code". Your webmaster or web developer might do this for you already. But just in case they have not, you can do it yourself for free.

Merge your digital marketing plan into your regular marketing plan

Sometimes it is still necessary to view digital marketing as distinct from our offline marketing. But increasingly that distinction is pointless and even harmful. It can lead to forgetting the basics of your marketing strategy such as your target market profiles, when thinking about social media. It can lead to forgetting the 3P's (price, promotion, placement) when it comes to your ecommerce activities.

What are Twitter hashtags?

Twitter hashtags such as #atlanta or #smallbusiness are an interesting invention created by the users of Twitter. Their purpose is to add context to your tweets so that related tweets can be found grouped together by the same hashtag.

Hashtags can be invented by anyone tweeting on Twitter, just by including a new hashtag in their own tweet. Many times your going to want to use an existing hashtag that another tweeter created so that your message becomes part of that larger conversation.

Make your digital marketing ideas happen

Digital marketing ideas are so freely shared that they are no secret. So the challenge to most businesses is not discovering the idea, but putting the idea to work. Taking the idea, and making it work for you, that is the key to moving from idea through to results.

What can you do to put more digital marketing ideas into practice for your business? Is there something you have been thinking of doing for some time, and never gotten around to yet?

Strive for simplicity in your email marketing

Simplicity is one of those deceptively difficult qualities to actually implement. When it comes to emails for instance, there is a tendency to want to do too much. A lot of company emails become a hodge-podge of conflicting messages. As a recipient, you might be asked to buy 4 or 5 different products, and go to an event, and leave feedback, and read articles, and so on.

Make unsubscribing from your mailing list easy

Any company doing email marketing must by law provide an unsubscribe link. And it must work. And it must be easy to find. Don't try to bury it, or let it be an afterthought in your planning. Remember that an unsubscribe is much better than a spam complaint. Losing subscribers is a part of list building, you gain some and lose some. Focus on keeping subscribers happy in ways you can control, but don't place any limitations on the ability of the recipient to leave your list.

Match your emails to your brand

Make sure the emails sent from your website, or your email marketing software all match your brand in terms of color, layout and overall styling. Too often companies use email templates that are different from their main brand and this creates inconsistency in the brand message.

Be persistent with your email marketing

It used to be said that it takes 8-10 impacts before you could make an impression on a prospect with an ad, but that was before the Internet age. Today that number has probably increased due to the amount of information being shared by brands online. So with your email marketing, you have to adopt a strategy that is patient, methodical and most of all, persistent. Aim to reach the target of 20 impacts with each subscriber. This means for instance if you reach each subscriber only once per month, you must keep them subscribed for 20-months.

Value clarity over creativity when writing email subject lines

Email subject lines need to tell the receiver what the point of your message is, and that point needs to be crystal clear. Your open rates will improve if you value this clarity and direct writing style over cute, creative or offbeat subject lines. There is a time and place to "get creative", and a subject line is the wrong place for it. You just don't have enough space, or enough attention from your audience.

So make your email subject lines descriptive, clear and focused.

Review your website every month

Your website works for you interfacing with customers every single day. So when is the last time you visited it, clicked through every major section, read through the content, clicked all the different buttons, filled out the forms, and went through the checkout process or used any of the other site features?

Increasing the Openness of your Business

According to Entrepreneur Magazine the latest CEO success buzzword is "openness". This was based on a study of more than 1,700 CEOs surveyed. Transparency and employee empowerment also ranked highly.

Create a Social Media Policy for your Business

Does your business have policies in place for how your employees will handle social media? Who is responsible for various aspects of your social media channels? What policies are in place to prevent abuse of social media by employees?

These are just a few of the questions businesses large and small are working to answer by creating Social Media Policies. You can think of the Social Media Policies you set as governing how your specific business interfaces with the world of social media.

Plan your Social Marketing Content Mix

A content mix is the % of different types of content you create and publish. For instance on your Facebook page you might choose a content mix that looks like the following:
  1. Reposted articles (40%)
  2. News snippets (30%)
  3. Links back to content on our own site (20%)
  4. Relevant quotes (10%)

What if your also in the habit of making videos a few times per month? Add this content type to your content mix and estimate the % changes:

Study each social channel

I still hear many small business owners say "I just don't GET social media". And some of these are smart people, so it's really not a matter of lacking the IQ point needed to GET IT. Social media, from a business perspective is a new field of study. Which means, you have to actually study it to make sense of it and gain and understanding. It would be a gross over-simplification to try to sum up social marketing in a single sentence, or a paragraph, or a single article.

Get your images indexed on Google

Image marketing is on the rise on social media networks and we should not overlook the option to have your images found on Google Image Search. You can do this by making sure your images have good meta data, this means using the "Alt" and "Title" tags. Also name the image in a description way, rather than using numbers or abbreviations.

Make this part of your SEO effort and in addition to having your images indexed it will also help search engines index the pages that include your images.

Share photos on social media sites

Text posting is definitely not the only option in social media. Pinterest is growing rapidly by showcasing social shared photos. Photo sharing is also possible on Flickr, Tumblr, and let's not forget Facebook and even Twitter. Each site has different options for picture posting, or in the case of Twitter linking to a photo share.

What are the main elements of a website?

There are 3 main elements to most websites:
  1. Design
  2. Content
  3. Features

I've listed these 3 main site elements in the order most people see and understand them when using a website. First they notice the design, then they begin to read the content, and then they become aware of features such as a contact form.

What is a good website development process?

There are many ways to divide the phases of building a new website. It is possible to shorten the steps in the process to 3 or 4 or to lengthen it to as many as 10. But the goal of viewing a website development process should be to convey an understanding of the major areas that need to be covered and the general order in which these things would normally be done. So with that in mind, our process at GoldHat is the following 5-stages.
